Broward’s Camp Sagemont goes beyond the typical day camp offerings. This summer, it features a new specialty camp that focuses on teaching music through the creative use of “Stomp-style” percussion.

Mar 29, 2012 - Camp Sagemont is not your typical day camp. Sure, it offers a traditional day camp program for PreK through 3rd graders, but where the camp has really earned a name for itself is with its programming for older campers. It offers a unique selection of specialty camp programs to appeal to all interests, from future forensics specialists to those who dream of the bright lights of Broadway.

“We want to go beyond the traditional day camp and offer programs that appeal to specific tastes and that get campers excited and motivated about trying new things,” shares Camp Director Edwin Cruz. That’s why Camp Sagemont offers options such as Adventure Camp, Art Camp, Sports Camp, Science Camp, and more. “Experimenting with new camp offerings has been a very positive and rewarding venture.”

New this summer will be Stomp It Band Camp, modeled after Sagemont’s popular Stomp-style percussion class. Under the direction of Noah Bellamy, who happens to be a member of the classic 70’s band KC and The Sunshine Band, campers will learn to make music using found objects such as buckets, paint cans, trash cans, or anything else the kids can get their hands on.

“The creativity in a class like this not only comes in the form of music, but also in the instruments we are playing,” explains Bellamy. “Because we are playing basic percussion instruments, the kids will see immediate results and have a great time learning about the mechanics of music.”

Stomp It Band Camp requires no previous musical experience or talent, for that matter. “The only requirement is a positive attitude and a willingness to learn about rhythms,” states Bellamy, noting this will help them in school. “The foundation of rhythm is rooted in math. Students who play an instrument and understand the workings of rhythm tend to do better not only in math, but in all subjects.”

While that may appeal to parents, for kids Stomp It Band Camp will be all about having fun making music. Campers who prefer vocals to percussion instruments, will love Camp Sagemont’s Glee Camp. Inspired by the hit TV show Glee, campers have the opportunity to sing, dance and perform just like the characters on the show. In fact, at the end of the session, campers put on a show for all of Camp Sagemont. “I like that we had our moment to shine and show who we are,” stated Katrina Samuell. Fellow camper Ana Melgarejo added, “It was fun to express ourselves.”

Camp Sagemont also offers a CSI Camp for those campers interested in learning about the crime scene investigation techniques they see on CSI. There is also a Science Camp for children interested in performing wacky experiments and exploring topics such as states of matter, forces of motion, microorganisms and cells, biomes and more.

For kids on the go, Camp Sagemont offers a summer Sports Camp, a Travel Camp, as well as its Adventure Camp. “Campers love all the adventurous field trips which challenge them, teach them how to enjoy outdoor activities and encourage them to try new things that may have been intimidating at first,” explains Cruz, noting that campers experience everything from mountain biking and rock climbing to go-karting and cable water skiing. “At the end of each activity, campers have a sense of accomplishment, improved self-confidence and self-esteem, and a stronger group bond.”

These camps are all geared toward students in third through eighth grades. “With the growing population of middle schoolers and tweens, we are accommodating this age group by providing unique camp options appealing to older kids with specific preferences and skills,” states Cruz.

Even the younger campers will enjoy many new programs at Camp Sagemont this summer. There will be more field trips, extra Color Wars, a weekly bounce house, and exciting new activities and entertainment options, which Cruz won’t reveal because he wants to surprise campers.

While its numerous program options appeal to children of all ages, parents love the flexibility at Camp Sagemont. Most of the programs are offered in one-week sessions, with the exception of some of the two-week specialty camps.
According to Cruz, “Camp Sagemont offers flexibility which aids parents in planning around family vacation and sleep away camp commitments. With our new online registration option, parents can easily register their children for programs with the click of a button. Register now to take advantage of our Early Bird discount available through April 15th.”

Camp Sagemont begins the week of June 11th and runs through August 10th. Camp hours are 9am to 3:30pm, with early care and after care available. All programs are held on Sagemont’s Lower School Campus.
The World’s Largest Swim Lesson was held simultaneously at venues across 5 continents. Officials are in the process of tallying the final numbers for entry in to the GuinnessWorldRecordTM Initial estimates are near 30,000 World’s Largest Swim Lesson participants. The purpose of the lesson was to build awareness about water safety, the importance of learning to swim and to ultimately prevent drowning.

“Swimming Lessons Save Lives,” was the theme for the event, now in its second year. Spokesman for the event is Rowdy Gaines, 3 time Olympic Holder and 11 Time World Record Holder. The headquarters for the event was at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park.

This is the latest issue of our monthly camp newsletter. We provide this on a monthly basis to inform you about camp days, summer camp registration, camp open houses and other pertinent camp information.
Please visit our brand new camp website www.campsagemont.com for all of our summer camp information and online registration.

Campers get ready to run, jump, dunk and dribble this summer! Sports Camp is offered in 9 weekly sessions which combines the convenience of a day camp with the fun of a travel camp. Campers will have the opportunity to participate in sport skill building techniques, exposure to new activities and lifetime recreation skills. Two weekly field trips are scheduled as well to add to the summer fun.
Sports focuses will include track &field/fitness, tennis/water sports, soccer, baseball/golf, basketball/lacrosse, flag football/badminton, outdoor games/team building, volleyball/ultimate Frisbee, group games, tournaments and camp-wide special events such as Color War and our Splash/Foam Party.
Athletic ability is not a requirement to be in Sports Camp but just the willingness to learn, have fun and make new friends.
